Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester's death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.
Transgender Day of Remembrance (#TDOR) is an annual observance, officially recognized on November 20th, but UUCO we will be observing Sunday, November 13th as the day to honor the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.
Sarah Schnaithman, who herself identifies as a transgender female, will lead us in a memorial service to honor those who have been murdered for being who they are. All are welcome and invited to be in community, as we take a moment, a moment which is sure to cause us to reflect on our commitment and our call to social justice as Unitarian Universalists.
