Music is an essential part of our services. It creates a time for deep reflection, joyful celebration, and beautiful connections. We will be singing and exploring hymns and songs from our UU tradition as well as some new tunes. Readings will enhance our understanding of the music and text. In addition, we will feature a variety of musical styles from many traditions. No music background or operatic voice needed!
Working for the Common Good: Strength to Lead & Faith to Follow - Sue Fino - Sunday, July 9, 20177/7/2017 Sue & Marty Fino grew up Catholic and came to Oxford in May 2016 to enjoy their retirement. Sue had never been to a march or a protest yet she found herself organizing the Oxford March for America which took place the day after the Presidential Inauguration. How did this happen? Sue will share some reflections on the journey from Catholicism to Unitarian Universalism and from bystander to activist.
For someone growing up attending patriotic Sundown Concerts by the United States Marine Corps Band at the Watergate Amphitheater below the massive steps leading from the Potomac River to the Lincoln Memorial, an examination of just who is a Patriot or what is Patriotic in today's world turned out to be a tougher-than-expected assignment; especially today, and especially from a Unitarian-Universalist perspective.
The congregation is invited to participate in a picnic on the grounds on July 2nd following the service. You are asked to bring a picnic lunch, drinks, and table service for you/your family, along with one dish to share, which could be a dessert, salad, drinks, or other item. Also, if you have portable canopy, please come a little early to set that up as a shelter from the sun. And if you have an outdoor game, bring it! There will be a very short service, beginning at 11:00 a.m. The children will be sent to the small RE room upon arrival at UUCO, where they will share in a story circle and activity during the message-time. By 11:30 a.m we hope to be set up to eat and play! |
