January 31 is the date for our congregation to participate in the UU-wide reading and discussion of Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. The book describes the journey of a young African-American lawyer who goes to Alabama to work on behalf of poor and wrongly-condemned victims of an unfair justice system. It's also one of the most engrossing UUA Common Read books in recent years. The service is for everyone to participate, so please come with or without the book! Luanne Buchanan and Susan Zachos will lead the service.

Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend - Video of Dr. Cornell West/Ware Lecture - January 17, 20161/14/2016 It is a very appropriate time of year to view and be inspired by the Ware Lecture from the General Assembly this past summer. Dr. Cornell West's talk will be the focus of the January 17 service...and you will find it enriching to your life. In fact, it might inspire you to help with the University of Mississippi service day, which will be happening the following day. Please join us at this special service on Martin Luther King weekend. Jeffery Peavy will be the Service Leader. It is easy to lose touch with awe, especially when we are surrounded by a life that seem perfectly tailored for us. Whether we are following our favorite YouTube channel, binge watching Netflix, or searching for something perfect on Amazon or EBay. New Music is tailored to fit specific age groups, and movies are built from test subjects made up of representative demographics. When do we have time for Awe if everyone is a demographic and everything is awesome? |
