He was ordained by the Unitarian Universalist (UU) Congregation of Atlanta and credentialed by the larger UU Association in 2014. He is a 2015 inductee into the Board of Preachers of the Martin Luther King, Jr. International College of Ministers and Laity. The UU General Assembly 2016, he was the Saturday preacher in Columbus, OH along side the Rev. Chris Buice, his mentor from Knoxville, TN.
We continue our theme of “This is MY Country! Whose?” with this sermon from Rev. Duncan Teague, minister of the Abundant LUUV congregation in South Atlanta. Although recorded on July 5, the message continues to be timely. Rev. Teague speaks of the difference between nationalism and patriotism, and of how he, as an African American gay man, can sing “Of Thee I Sing” if he sings to the higher ideals we have yet to achieve. Rev. Teague has been the visiting minister at UUCO and we are pleased to welcome him back in this virtual manner!

Whose country? How do working-class people answer that question? How are their lives defined by the options and opportunities they have - or don't have? How does nationalism prevent the flourishing of international solidarity, and how can we overcome boundaries and borders? Shruti Iyer and Jaz Brisack, who became friends studying labor law and history at Oxford University in England, are passionate about advocating for the world's working people and will discuss these issues with us.
We are a welcoming congregation but due to security concerns we are unable to publish the link to our services. We invite you to attend and you may get the link by emailing Sandra Moss at [email protected]. Services begin at 11:00 am with the "doors" opening at 10:30 am. Whose country? Joanne Gabrynowicz will share another story of coming to America. She is the granddaughter of immigrants who both struggled and who were empowered by some of the enlightened immigration policies of their day, and by extension, so was Joanne. She says she is now an “endangered species.” A retired law professor with expertise in space law and an undergraduate degree in American and British history, Joanne has a keen appreciation of the Constitution, its roots and the meaning of “We, the People.” She will share her own story as the beneficiary of the policies that met her four grandparents when they arrived in this country in the early 20th Century.

Speakers: Members and Friends of UUCO Service Leader: Eunice Benton On this weekend when Independence Day – the 4th of July – is once again the holiday we note, and in a week when our state has made the historic move of retiring the flag that contained the Confederate battle emblem in its corner, our service addresses the personal and spiritual feelings of patriotism. At this pivotal time in history, how do we feel about being citizens of our country – and our state… and our town? When do we feel proud and loyal? When do we feel dismayed and ashamed, even? How do our individual life experiences and identities shape what we feel? Voices from our UUCO community will address these questions… and then our gathered community will continue to explore them during our coffee hour. This theme will be further explored in coming Sundays in July… Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Oxford is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
