Speaker: Effie Burt

What is Memorialization work? Why do it? Memorialization is a form of public history, specifically, telling a more truthful story of the history of racial terrorism in Lafayette Co., in Mississippi and in this country. The Lafayette Community Remembrance Project (LCRP) has been among the first groups in Mississippi to place public markers naming the known victims of lynching. This year, on June 7-9, over 15 groups doing similar advocacy work will gather in Oxford to share strategies, struggles, and successes in a conference that is open to everyone. As a preview of this gathering and an introduction to this work, Effie Burt will be our guest speaker on June 2. Well known as a local musician, Effie has been part of LCRP since it started in 2017. Doing this work grows empathy, fosters learning and contributes to community-based healing and reconciliation.
