Consistent throughout our UU Principles is a call for us to stand up and take actions against injustices. Whether we are directly affected or not, we are called to stand up angainst these injustices in whatever form they may take.
As we are all well aware, the State of Mississippi is a hotbed of civil rights issues for marginalized communities. To combat issues of discrimination, the ACLU of Mississippi has launched its newest full-time initiative, the LGBTQ Justice Project. Join us to meet their newest staff attorney, McKenna Raney-Gray, as she discusses key areas of focus for the ACLU of Mississippi overall, followed by a dive into the specific objectives for the program McKenna has been charged to lead, which is aimed at fighting against inequalities and access to justice issues throughout LGBTQ communities of Mississippi. Finally, McKenna will take questions about her role as a contemporary civil rights advocate and attorney in today's Mississippi.
Bio: McKenna Raney-Gray joined the ACLU of Mississippi as the LGBTQ Justice Project Staff Attorney in August 2021, where she focuses on legal issues, advocacy, and outreach in the LGBTQ+ community. She graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Law, where she was a student in the MacArthur Justice Clinic for civil rights. She identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community. McKenna studied anthropology and gender studies at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. Upon graduating, she embarked on a postgraduate Thomas J. Watson fellowship to pursue a yearlong international project examining human-horse relationships in cross-cultural contexts including South Africa, Turkey, and Argentina.
